Abstract

Abstract ‘Rio Verde’ seeds were planted 23 Jun in a Hagerstown silt loam soil in Centre County, PA. Seedling cabbage was thinned to 9 inch spacing on 23 Jul. Row spacing was 36 inches. Plots were 17 ft long by 3 rows wide plus one buffer row and were arranged in a randomized complete block design with 4 replicates. Insecticides were applied 8 and 20 Sept using a C02-pressurized Bak-Pak sprayer delivering 32 gal/acre at 22 psi. Imported cabbageworm (ICW) larvae were sampled on 10 plants per plot. At harvest (10 Oct) 10 heads/plot were rated for insect damagt using a 1-6 scale: (1 = no apparent insect feeding, 6 = severe head and leaf damage). A rating > 3 was considered not suitable for fresh market. Rainfall totalled 5.00 inches for Jul, 2.18 inches for Aug, and 4.94 inches for Sept. Average weekly maximum and minimum temperatures (°F) were 91 and 51 for Jul, 83 and 45 for Aug, and 82 and 41 for Sept, respectively.
