Abstract

Publication 60 of ICRP which includes new recommendations on the quality factor concept and on annual equivalent dose limits, will introduce some changes in neutron monitoring procedures. The implications of the new ‘radiation weighting factors’, defined in that document, combined with the decrease in the annual dose limits are analysed with respect to the new ICRU operational quantities. It is shown that the energy response of radiation protection instruments and the angular response of individual dosemeters have to be improved and that the lower limit of detection of portable monitors and individual dosemeters must be decreased by a large factor (up to 10), as a result of which difficulties will be encountered in individual dosimetry.
