Abstract
This article is based on a current study aiming at showing the relationship between the national urbanization process and the effort made by the Ecclesiastical Institutionality, particularly the Social Pastoral, trying to offer answers to such changes and new challenges. At the same time, the urbanization process is presented as a consequence of social changes, particularly those related to the country›s productive activity, being also the cause for the challenges the Chilean Social Pastoral church has to face according to its reflection expressed in Christian Social thought. This study also intends to show that such process matches the social identity of the national church.

Summary
El presente artículo es parte de una investigación en curso[1] que tiene como propósito poder constatar de qué forma la urbanización, en cuanto fenómeno socio-cultural, político y económico, ha tenido repercusión y ha sido asumida desde la Doctrina y Acción Social Eclesial Nacional (Chile). Dicho contexto socio-cultural está dominado por la modernidad y globalización con un fuerte sesgo de secularización, que aleja cada vez más a la persona de Dios, pero sobre todo de la experiencia eclesial. Pero que ayuda a poder reubicarnos en torno a este nuevo paradigma que nos propone la ciudad y la forma como la Iglesia pretende responder por medio de la Pastoral Urbana, es que ella es un medio y una perspectiva para la labor evangelizadora de la Iglesia. Un cuidado muy especial se ha de brindar al mundo del sufrimiento urbano, como son todos aquéllos que se hallan caídos a lo largo del camino: los que se encuentran en los hospitales, los encarcelados, excluidos, los adictos a las drogas, y también se debe tener cuidado de los habitantes de las nuevas periferias, en las nuevas urbanizaciones[16]
