Abstract

Obesity represents a public health problem. In Spain, almost half of the population are overweight and it is estimated that more than 1% are obese, with a tendency to increase last forty years. Is calculated that obesity in Spain, consumes 7% of health expenditure (approximately 2,880 million/year), which places a great economic burden on the Spanish health system. Currently, bariatric surgery, introduced in the therapeutic arsenal since July 2013, is the most effective treatment to achieve a significant and sustained weight loss in patients with morbid obesity, with the consequent improvement of associated comorbidities and a lower cardiovascular risk.
