Abstract

This paper summarizes the findings from a case study regarding the implementation of a quick response (QR) system within the retail industry. QR requires a heavy investment in information technology (IT). The benefits of the adoption of this new technology were limited by how flexible the organizational culture was in absorbing the changes imposed by the IT systems. The paper reports on the cultural adaptation of retail structure, operations, and personnel to IT change in five specific areas: power and politics, organizational communications, functional integration, changes in work flows, and cultural issues of implementing IT-based systems. The results of IT change in the retail industry were examined, and four recommendations are provided to help retail organizations cope with the changes imposed by IT implementation.
