Abstract

This paper is largely conceptual but also somewhat empirical in nature. It provides a discussion of possible contributions of futurism to independent hotel and motel service planning. The coverage includes a description of futurism, its contributions to service planning, the utilization of futurism in the industry, and alternative methods for developing long-term scenarios. Further, it sets forth the outcome of an inquiry into the extent of use of this method by independent hotel and motel managers. The inquiry indicates that many of these managers do not place great emphasis on the long-run future when they are involved in service planning.
