Abstract

ABSTRACTHealth care system libraries and librarians serve multiple functions that fit within the Medical Library Association’s Task Force on Vital Pathways for Hospital Librarians goals and directives. This article is an example of how a librarian expanded her role and responsibilities to include working with hospital clinicians and researchers to refine a custom-built patient portal for patients with a spinal cord injury. This led to trainings with patients, families, and clinicians. Extending beyond the ‘typical’ reach of the librarian allowed for the librarian to demonstrate that the library is more than its space and that the librarian has useful skills for patient outreach projects.
