Abstract
This paper intends to present a work carried out for the French Ministry of Ecology and Sustainable Development aimed to develop a monitoring system for the French National Strategy for Sustainable Development The purpose of this paper is focused on the evaluation of sustainability on three axes: a reflection on the framework of the national strategy for sustainable development: How to make a hierarchy between strategic objectives? How to avoid the multiplication of actions? Where should be the frontiers between sustainable development policies and other government policies? a discussion on the methodology used to elaborate indicators: partial use of logical diagrams, screening indicators (individually and at the system level) through a quality assessment grid and an intranet for fulfilling indicators a reflection on difficulties encountered during the process.
