Abstract

In April 1995, Wisconsin’s law initiating independent prescriptive authority for advanced practice nurses went into effect. At the Milwaukee County Mental Health Division, state-licensed advanced practice psychiatric nurse prescribers were now eligible to prescribe medication, but they had no experience in doing so. Advanced practice psychiatric nurse prescribers needed the opportunity to synthesize previous learning and prescribing principles. This article will discuss the development of an innovative course that prepares learners for their new role through case presentations and clinical mentorship experiences.
