Abstract

This research article enables understanding the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) in terms of classification of routing protocols in Sensor Networks. Substantial research efforts in WSNs resulted in surplus routing protocols with different criteria on which the protocols can be classified. The classification for most routing algorithms is not an easy task because of some overlapping features between different categories. Since WSNs are application specific, one routing protocol can only support and satisfy a specific class of WSN application requirements, leading to development of various routing protocols which are suitable for a particular class of applications. The most common criteria is based on the operation of routing mechanisms employed which results various routing categories. In routing protocols, each category have associated advantages and disadvantages. This paper explains the implementation of reactive and proactive routing protocols taking an example of Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) Routing Protocol and Destination-Sequenced Distance-Vector Routing (DSDV) Routing Protocol. The simulation results provide the comparison of routing protocols reflecting their performance under various parameters consideration.
