Abstract

AbstractThe inclusion of the forward error correction (FEC) encoding scheme based on low density parity check codes (LDPC) in Digital Video Broadcasting Second Generation for Satellite (DVB-S2) standard has made it as one of the remarkable digital broadcasting standard presently in market. This paper proposes the implementation of three LDPC decoder algorithms viz.; sum product algorithm (SPA), min sum algorithm (MSA), single scan algorithm (SSA) to thoroughly understand the decoding capability for DVB-S2 standard. In this paper SPA, MSA, SSA are simulated in matlab to understand the performance of the algorithms for various SNR values when run for DVB-S2 standard for code rates viz.; 1/4, 2/3, and 8/9. For the classification of the decoders we consider performance, using bit error rate (BER) and number of iterations taken to decode, as the parameters. SPA algorithm shows very good performance in terms of BER when compared to other two algorithms discussed here. Also SPA is advantageous than MSA and SSA, taking lowest iterations to decode as there is no modifications done to the received a posteriori probability (APP) values. It is found that though MSA is computationally efficient but it takes more iteration among the three decoders.
