Abstract Implantation into metals at room and lower temperatures can produce metastable phases. Substitutional and interstitial solid solutions have been formed at low concentrations (≲1 at. %) in Be, Fe, Ni and Cu. At higher concentrations (≳10 at. %) both metastable solid solutions and amorphous alloys have been formed by implantation in Fe, Ni and Cu.
