Abstract

The middle,school teacher, more than any other single factor, holds the key to realization of effective middle school programs. Teachers make the difference. The better prepared the staff is to work with youngsters this age, the greater the likelihood that the middle school will be successful. If this assumption is accepted, then major changes in pre-service teacher preparation programs are called for at the university level since few colleges have programs to formally prepare middle school teachers and few states mandate special middle school teacher certification.
