Abstract

Alternating-current impedance techniques were applied to organic coatings on mild steel in dilute sodium chloride solutions. The coatings used and the thicknesses employed were chosen to be typical of those systems frequently used for total immersion in marine conditions. A transfer function analyzer was used with high-impedance interfaces, and information was obtained concerning the impedance behavior of these coatings at frequencies that had previously been impossible. Equivalent circuit models analyzed the data obtained, and an assessment of the behavior of these coatings was made in the light of the analysis.
