Abstract

A novel broad-band mechanical impedance matching transformer, with applications to gravitational radiation detectors is described. The transformer utilises transverse modes in a tapered beam, or 'whip'. The whip is analysed by the WKB method, and the calculated wavefunction and amplitude gain are shown to be in reasonable agreement with experiment.
