Abstract

Progressive relaxation training and short-term cognitive psychotherapy were offered to postsurgical coronary patients. Weekly sessions lasting about 2 hr. were offered during a 6-wk. program for individuals who were members of Mended Hearts, Inc. The sessions included teaching patients the fundamentals of progressive relaxation as well as helping them to restructure their beliefs. Multivariate analyses of variance showed that treatment led to a significant increase in self-esteem and a decrease in depression.
