Abstract

Objective To observe the effect of the nursing intervention of progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) training on patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Methods Sixty patients with irritable bowel syndrome were randomly divided into two groups: the observation group having 30 patients and the control group having 30 patients. All the patients were given the regular treatment and nursing. The patients in the observation group received additional sessions of PMR training. Results 12 weeks later, the scores of SDS and SAS in the observation group (39.96 ± 6.68 ;38.9 ± 2.53, respectively) were obviously lower than those in the control group (P <0.01), and the grave exponent of symptom (1.93 ± 0.63) and the symptom frequency exponent (2.73 ± 0. 75) in the observation group were also lower than those in the control group (P < 0. 05). Conclusions PMR training can improve patients' state of moods, reduce the stress levels and relieve the bowel symptom significantly. It's an effectively nursing intervention for IBS.
