Abstract
This study utilized institutional theory to examine how the Governance Code implemented in Japan in 2019 increased the number of female board members in national sport federations (NF) recognized by the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC). Using the three mechanisms of antecedents that lead to changes in institutional isomorphism as a framework (coercive isomorphism, mimetic processes, and normative pressures), we conducted semi-structured interviews with board members of sport organizations and analyzed the obtained data using thematic analysis. The results revealed institutional isomorphism influenced gender diversity on NF boards and identified the mechanisms that promote gender diversity on the boards of sport organizations.
