Abstract
Abstract This chapter contains descriptions of the types of immune response to infection found in mosquitoes. A brief introduction on the types of immunity is presented. Topics discussed are as follows: immune response to viruses; serine proteases; recognition proteins; regulation of the immune response in Anopheles gambiae; antimicrobial peptides; haemocyte types and their characteristics; phagocytosis; structural observations of encapsulation; immune and other roles of melanin in mosquitoes; and modulation of host immune responses by salivary proteins.
