Abstract

Imaging the Homeland: Gender and Palestinian National Discourses The subject of the article is the imaging of the lost homeland in Palestinian national discourses. The focus of the piece is an exploration of the gendering of the homeland in a study of the images of the mother, the virgin and the beloved as they are represented in Palestinian art and popular culture. The discussion commences with an examination of post-colonial theories in relation to the insights they provide for a study on women and women’s bodies in relation to how they are represented in conflicts and national discourses. These theories inform the exploration of the importance of gender in Palestinian nationalism and the ways in which representations of the feminine homeland articulate the relationship of Palestinians to the homeland and contour male and female agency in the national struggle.
