Abstract

Acuteabdomenisthemostcommoncauseofpresentation to the emergency room. Although conditions such as acute appendicitis, cholecystitis, pancreatitis, bowel obstruction, and acute gynecologic pathologies are more common causes of acute abdominal and pelvic pain, there are a number of uncommon acute pathologies that are important to diagnose because of either the high morbidity and mortality associated with them or their ability to mimic surgical abdomen. We discuss the clinical findings, common imaging methods performed for diagnosis, and radiologic imaging features of uncommon abdominal pathologies that can present with acute abdomen. The conditions include ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), acute mesenteric ischemia, perforated peptic ulcer, volvulus, intussusception, internal hernia, acute epiploic appendagitis, and spontaneous splenic hemorrhage.
