Abstract

After the victory over the Second Empire in 1867, the government of Benito Juárez undertook the task of rebuilding and consolidating the Liberal Republic. It was necessary not only to strengthen the "material order" in the Nation, but, above all, to instil in its citizens a new "spiritual order." Juárez thought that this order would only be achieved through education and public instruction. To this end, the president entrusted Gabino Barreda with the planning and reorganization of the entire Mexican educational system. Later, Justo Sierra would retake, modify and promote the educational system created by Barreda. The paradox is that this system was inspired by an ideology contrary to revolutionary liberalism: the positivism. Why did the Mexican liberal government put its eyes on conservative theories and models such as positivism?

Positivism and Public Instruction in Mexico at the End of the 19th century. Gabino Barreda and Justo Sierra’s Educational Thoughts. Después de su victoria sobre el Segundo Imperio en 1867, el gobierno de Benito Juárez se dio a la tarea de reconstruir y consolidar la República liberal. Fue menester no sólo afianzar el “orden material” en la nación, sino sobre todo inculcar en sus ciudadanos un nuevo “orden espiritual”. Juárez pensaba que dicho orden sólo se alcanzaría a través de la educación y la instrucción pública. El presidente encomendó a Gabino Barreda la planeación y reorganización de todo el sistema educativo mexicano.
