Abstract
Invested with a curious nostalgia, the evocation of the past displays the set of ideas by which one era signals to itself that it is referring to another. Just as in linguistic terms words such as “spareness” and “simplicity” might point to colonial furnishings, or “decorative excess” might indicate the later decades of the nineteenth century in a terminological shorthand, so in visual terms certain tropes are associated with a past moment in time.
