Abstract

There are still significant problems in managing public pedestrian transport areas, even when using closed circuit television (CCTV). This paper describes some image processing techniques suitable for an automatic crowd monitoring system. The feasibility of such system has been studied by investigating the measurement of crowd density and motion. Two methods have been developed to estimate density, whilea motion is measured by grey-level matching. The results obtained by these techniques are comparable to those obtained by human observers, with potential for real-time implementation.
