Abstract

This paper describes a method for measuring carbon black pellet size distribution (PSD). Carbon black pellet size is related to mixing efficiency, working environment, and transport. Therefore, must be managed appropriately. The standard method ASTM D1511 to measure the pellet size requires too much time for real field analysis, and thus it is impossible to check the in-line pellet size. Therefore, if a pellet size issue occurs during operation, it cannot be addressed quickly. This paper presents a method for frequent, real-time carbon black PSD measurement through image processing. The processes for pellet imaging, image processing, PSD calculation, and original image processing correction are introduced in detail. A comparison of the ASTM 1511 and image analysis results was also performed. Finally, the in-line monitoring results analyzed by the image processing method are described. This study provides a more efficient and improved method to analyze carbon black PSDs.
