Image Enhancement in Automatic Mode by Piecewise NonLinear Contrast Stretching

Abstract

In this paper the problem of rapid (in real-time) image contrast enhancement in automatic mode with an acceptable level of computational costs is considered. The purpose of the work is to improve the efficiency of increasing the overall contrast for complex monochrome images in automatic mode. A new approach to enhance the image contrast by adaptive piecewise nonlinear contrast stretching in an automatic mode is proposed. A new technique to adaptive increase in the overall contrast for complex monochrome images is proposed based on piecewise nonlinear transformation of the dynamic range of image brightness. The paper presents the results of research of the proposed technique and known methods of contrast enhancement using no-reference metrics of contrast.
