Abstract
In this chapter, the state-of-the-art 2D and 3D image and video compression standards are described. The H.265/HEVC is the most recent transform-based video coding standard developed by the Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC). It provides a significantly improved compression performance relative to its predecessor H.264/AVC standard, achieving an average bitrate reduction of 50% for the same subjective quality. HEVC addresses the main video coding challenges that appeared in the recent years, in particular the compression of high video resolutions beyond HD format, as well as the use of parallel processing architectures. Although HEVC was primarily designed for video compression, its performance for intra-frame coding has made it an unequivocal approach for still image coding, presenting state-of-the-art results.
