Abstract

On September 11th 1820, Joseph Pelletier and Joseph Bienaimé Caventou communicated about their researches on Cinchona trees. They first described the isolation of Cinchonine from grey cinchona tree. Then they described the process they followed to isolate and identify Quinine from yellow Cinchona trees. They proved that it was a new and an alkaline compound and studied its chemical properties. Then they compared the compositions of the three kinds of Cinchona tree. They showed that the red one, Cinchona succirubra at the time, was richer than the others, so far as Quinine and Cinchonine were concerned. François Magendie performed the first pharmacological studies. Quinine Sulfate was administered by François Clément Maillot in 1834 to soldiers of French Army in Algeria, in order to treat them with success against malaria.
