Abstract
At Arezzo in 1993 Oscar Mischiati and Mauro Ferrante presented the first prototype of a computer datasheet for antique organs, that moved away from the old practice of attachments to OA (Object of Art) datasheets. This offered a very good opportunity to test the same approach for application to all other types of musical instruments. In addition the development of SMO (Musical Instruments – Organ) is an important achievement of ICCD (Central Institute for Cataloguing and Documentation), largely resulting from the complex work carried out by Sergio Chierici. This work compels us to emphasize that the implementation of an electronic databank for historically important musical instruments is a must. Also, an electronic databank management system must be implemented to handle the large amount of information required to continuously update the musical instruments datasheets (e.g. by adding a complete inventory of the organ pipes when an antique organ is restored).
