Abstract

Systematic premedication of patients who must receive a contrast media during a radiological examination is not conceivable considering the low incidence of reactions to iodinated contrast media and gadolinium salts. Various protocols of premedication, including the use of corticoids and/or antihistamines have been proposed. In fact, each center uses its own protocol, which reflects the fact that the efficacy of such premedication is not evident. Although proposed in certain recommendations of scientific societies, the practice of premedication with corticoids has no scientific support, according to an analysis of the literature. Finally, considering the low incidence of immunologically-mediated immediate hypersensitivity reactions with the contrast media now used, especially the iodinated ones, it is difficult to promote the use of premedication before administration of contrast media.
