Abstract

The work provides an in-depth analysis of foreign debt of third-world countries. The authors first summarise the main trends of the foreign debt of developing countries in order to frame, on a quantitative level, the debt problem and the strategy t o face it. Official proposals and results are provided before the conceptual foundations and operational mechanisms of debt reduction are dealt with. The role of international financial institutions in the debt strategy is analysed and some considerations on debt sustainability are provided. A brief taxonomy of the countries in question is then offered. Finally, the middle-income debtors and their problems and prospects are analysed, followed by the low income debtors and their operational solutions. JEL Codes: F34
