Abstract

"The Perspective Position of St. Basil of Caesarea on the Function of the Epinoia in the Context of the Eunomian Controversy. Writing in the context of the Eunomin Controversy, Basil of Caesarea defends the value of human epinoia (thought, intent) which, while processing reality in a cognitive sense, can also scrutinise the content and results of what is already known. The implications of the epinoetic process – which engages all of the human faculties – are closely related to the formation of language and to the attributing of names to things. Within the context of theological reflection, the epinoetic process is useful insofar as, in virtue of the binomial unity-distinction, it allows, as far as is humanly possible, the development of knowledge regarding the Trinitarian Mystery and of the Mystery of Christ. Through the diversity of designations that are permitted here, the articulation and elaboration of theological language is encouraged which, in turn, helps to aid one’s progress in spiritual matters. Keywords: Basil of Caesarea, Eunomio, epinoetic process, Trinitarian Mystery, formation of language. "
