Abstract

The experience gained during the “Giovanni Ciuffreda” collection cataloguing effort indicates that a single format should be chosen for the documentation of all musical instruments, classical or folk-type as they may be, with the exception of organs. The need to decide a minimum of data fields, to define common clear terms for classification and to create technical dictionaries for the classification terminology are highlighted. Also highlighted is the need to make the resulting database accessible to the general public.
