Abstract
Allergic asthma is a complex disorder that is characterized by airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) to a variety of stimuli, excessive airway mucus production, chronic pulmonary eosinophilia and elevated serum immunoglobulin E (IgE). Data from animal models suggest a critical role for T helper 2 (Th2) cells in the pathophysiology of asthma and the involvement of interleukin 4 (IL-4) and IL-5.
