Abstract

1. Introduction. Most of the new species described in the following paper come from the Starfish Beds in the Ashgillian mudstones of Lady Burn, Girvan. The Starfish Beds of this locality have been vigorously wrought by a few workers in recent years. Formerly it was possible to follow the lowest fossiliferous horizon—the original Starfish Bed—for a considerable distance along the strike of the strata and little excavation was required. More recently, on account of the steep dip of the beds, it has been necessary to confine operations to a more limited area, with the result that the original bed is now as many feet below the surface as it was formerly inches and is today overlain by some eight feet of the mudstones. In the year 1935 a new fossiliferous bed was discovered by Mr. T. McTaggart exactly 18 inches above the lower bed. These two horizons were for some time referred to as Beds No. 1 and No. 2 or as the Lower and Upper Starfish Beds respectively. Within the last few years, however, two additional fossiliferous beds have been located and it has now become essential to number the beds as follows:— It has been suggested to the writer by Professor A.
