Abstract

The article is dedicated to the novel “New Blood” (1900) by the Catalan writer M. Vayreda. It analyzes the reflection of the author’s political views in the novel and reveals Vayreda’s ideological shift as he switches from Carlism to conservative Catalan nationalism. “New Blood” is considered in the context of socio-political changes in the Spanish society at the turn of the 20th century. The analysis of the means of creating the character images is carried out. Each of the novel’s characters is viewed as a bearer of a certain political ideology. The writer advocates for the autonomy of Catalonia from the central government in Madrid as well as to romanticize the Catalan province, contrasted with Barcelona and the neighbouring cities.
