Abstract
Entrepreneurship as an academic field has experienced phenomenal growth in the last three decades. The purpose of this study is to identify the main topics and the evolving trends in the field of entrepreneurship research. We examined all the academic publications in two leading journals of entrepreneurship from inception to 2015. These two journals are Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice and Journal of Business Venturing. A data-driven approach was used in the analysis of the academic articles in the field of entrepreneurship as published in these journals. Our study identified leading themes of research in entrepreneurship in the journals as well as the trends of the identified themes over time. The results also reveal the common themes between the two journals as well as themes that are different. Finally loadings of the same article into different themes present interesting patterns of connections among the research themes in each journal. The results of this study are significant in that they provide data-driven insights into the structures and trends of research themes, the intellectual core of entrepreneurship research as represented by the leading journals in the field.
