Abstract
C/sup 14/-labeled biphenyl was irradiated with 4 x 10/sup 7/ r gamma rays at 100 deg C in vacuum and the radiolytic yields of terphenyls and quaterphenyls determined. The G-values were found to be 6.3 x 10/sup -3/, 1.2 x 10/sup -3/, and8.3 x 10/sup -4/ for o-, m-, and p-terphenyls and 4.9 x 10/sup -3/ , 5.1 x 10/sup -3/, and 1.04 x 10/sup -2/ for o,o -, m,m -, and p,p - quaterphcnyls, respectively. The results indicate that the rate of C-H bond rupture is of the same magnitude as that of C-C (phenyl-phenyl) bond rupture and that there is an orientation effect in the substitution reaction of biphenyl with phenyl and biphenyl radicals.
