Abstract

83As and 84As fission products are separated at short time intervals from 235U irradiated with thermal neutrons and are studied by separating and measuring the activities of their bromine grand-daughters. 83As has a 14·1 ± 1·1 sec half-life and decays predominantly to 70 sec 83mSe; 84As has a 5·8±0·5 sec half-life. The fractional cumulative yields for thermal fission are 0·80±0·08 for 83As and 0·17±0·02 for 84As. The nuclear charge distribution in this mass region, analysed in terms of Wahl's empirical Z P function, shows a fine-structure effect at mass 84.
