Abstract
Chickpea samples showing viral‐like symptoms of stunting and yellowing were collected from different parts of Algeria. Transmission trials on three species of aphids (Acyrthosiphon pisum, Aphis craccivora and Aphis fabae) to a limited range of hosts, and ELISA tests, led to the identification of bean leaf roll luteovirus. Field sampling also allowed identification, by ELISA and TBIA tests, of two other viruses: a luteovirus closely related to beet western yellows luteovirus, and faba bean necrotic yellows nanavirus. Ten species of aphids were identified by trapping in affected fields, most being previously known vectors of the three viruses concerned.
