Abstract
To evaluate alumina-clusters and inclusions containing powder components in slabs, the following items were examined by focussing on sulphur prints of slabs:1) Surface roughness of slabs after polishing2) Quality of printing paper3) Microscopic examination of spots on a sulphur print and identification of foreign substances by the use of an electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA)The method newly established for the evaluation was applied to a slab, 66 slabs adjacent to this slab were rolled into tinplates for DWI cans, and defects detected by magnetic inspection and white spot defects were judged. From this examination, it was found that the cleanliness of slabs quantitatively determined by the new method is an effective means of estimating the quality of finished products.
