Abstract
Background: Disability in any form restricts the functional capacity, space and opportunity for full participation in society. When there are lot of problems faced by community at public places due to inaccessibility, these problems are more prominent for persons with various disabilities. Freedom to move makes a person confident and as a result there is more productivity and contribution to nation growth. Asociety that is positive towards such special people will provide all those required support and infrastructure which makes a person with disability feel comfortable to access to any place to fulfil his need or responsibility. Hence the attitude of the local public including family members plays an important role in promoting a society that is truly inclusive to any person with any kind of disability. Objective: To identify the mobility issues faced by persons with locomotor disability in and around Anand, Gujarat, India. To study the attitude of people towards persons with locomotor disability in and around Anand, Gujarat, India. Method: Total of 100 persons with locomotor disability were interviewed to find out the common public places that are inaccessible and the reasons for the inaccessibility. 300 participants from in and around Anand were asked to fill the Attitude Towards Disabled Persons - Original (ATDP-O) so as to identify whether the attitude of the society towards the persons with disability is positive or negative. Results: It was found that 76% people had accessibility issues. 57% of people had positive attitude towards persons with disability. 43% of people had negative attitude. Conclusion: Built environment such as ramps, broad gateways, non-slippery floors, accessible desks, toilets influences health issues especially accessibility for persons with locomotor disability.
