Abstract
1.1. Sterols of the scallop, Placopecten magellanicus (Gmelin), were isolated by preparative gas-liquid chromatography and identified by analytical gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) and mass spectrometry.2.2. Both the 22-cis and 22-trans isomers of cholesta-5,22-dien-3β-ol were identified by separation on GLC. This is the first known isolation of 22-cis-cholesta-5, 22-dien-3β-ol from a natural sterol mixture.3.3. Cholesterol, 24-methylenecholesterol and brassicasterol were the principal sterols.4.4. Other sterols identified by GLC and mass spectrometry were β-sitosterol and 28-isofucosterol.5.5. Mass spectrometry indicated the probable presence of cholestanol in the cholesterol fraction and poriferasterol (or stigmasterol) in the 24-methylene-cholesterol fraction.6.6. Minor components tentatively identified were 22:23-dihydrobrassicasterol (or campesterol), fucosterol and a C30H50O sterol.
