Abstract
Beethoven's Piano Sonata in D major Op. 28 was written in 18o 01 and is one of several works marking the onset of his middle-period style.' While the nickname Pastoral did not originate with Beethoven, it may have been generated by his prominent use of lilting melodies with drone-like, pedal-point accompaniments for the primary themes in the outer movements, as well as by the folk-like style of the Scherzo.2 This study focuses on the second movement, and here Czerny's remarks tell us something about the music's character and also indicate Beethoven's high opinion of it:
