Abstract

The economical efficiency and structural characteristics of offshore platforms with bucket foundations is an important concern in the oil/gas exploration of marginal oil fields. JZ9-3E riser platform, which was set up in the Bohai Sea, is such structure. However, very severe ice-induced vibrations were observed. A finite element model was established to analyze the structural characteristics for this platform. A good comparison between modal analysis and full-scale observation was obtained, which shows the dynamic similarity between the numerical model and the prototype platform structure. To reduce the ice-induced vibrations, a fixed ice-breaking cone was installed on this platform. Both of the FE model results and the observed data showed that the fixed ice-breaking cone can isolate the ice-induced vibrations effectively.
