Abstract
<p>A significant amount of stigma exists around the phenomenon of young motherhood. The dominant discourse positions young mothers as being irresponsible, morally-compromised and overall, problematic. Employing feminist standpoint theory, this study explores the bifurcation of the dominant discourse of young motherhood and that which is presented by young mothers, themselves. A phenomenological approach is used to uncover a more nuanced understanding of the experiences of young mothers and their perspectives on a particular developmental screening tool, the Ages and Stages Questionnaire. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with ten mothers between the ages of 16 and 21. After conducting a phenomenological analysis, findings revealed a wealth of information about their everyday experiences raising children, managing a plurality of responsibilities, and navigating existing barriers. Overall, this study’s findings represent the overwhelming strengths and competencies of young mothers.</p>
