Abstract

The article presents and discusses a recent French book devoted to poor people in public libraries. The book, titled Des pauvres a la bibliotheque, is a sociological study based on several interviews of users at BPI (Bibliotheque public d’information) in Paris. This important essay couples individual stories with a theoretical analysis that explains the complexity of social marginalization and shows the role public libraries can play in handling it.
