Abstract
Local lesions were induced on Phaseolus vulgaris var. Pinto by inoculation with tobacco necrosis virus. At 24–36 and 120 h, alkali-soluble protein–polysaccharide complexes (I and II, respectively) were isolated from the primary leaves.Amino acid analyses indicated that the protein components of I and II were similar and related in composition to known plant cell wall proteins. The two preparations differed principally in their carbohydrate moieties; preparation II contained more glucose and this glucose was shown to occur as a β-(1 → 4)-linked glucan. Preparation I contained mostly (1 → 4)-linked glucose but, in addition, (1 → 3)-linked glucose (callose-type linkage) was present. Both complexes contained acid-labile arabinose as well as mannose and galactose.
