Abstract

Abstract “Jumbos are on the road! Before you go out, follow our updates!” No mainstream media outlet would carry such news pertaining to a remote town in Eastern India. However, a hyperlocal news website did. This essay maps the growth of such digital media platforms,whether in the form of websites, YouTube channels or Facebook pages that cater to smalltowns and districts in eastern India. We show how both local journalists and citizens are changing the hyperlocal news culture across Eastern India.
