Abstract

Methanation of carbon dioxide was studied by using rare earth metal alloys such as LaNi5 and LaNi4 X (X = transition metal) at 200˜400°C under l˜50kg/cm2. The order of the activity was LaNi5>LaNi4Cr>Ni>LaNi4Cu>LaNi4Al. When LaNi5 was used, the yield of methane was 93% at 300°C under 50atm. The rate of methanation was very rapid, and STY of methane was as high as 890 mol/l.h. for LaNi5. The pattern of metallic Ni increased in XRD analysis for nickel and lanthanum oxide catalyst during in site activation of LaNi5. The XRD pattern was similar to that of coprecipitated Ni/La2O3 and catalytic activity was a little superior to coprecipitated Ni/La2O3 at low temperature.
